Rabbit Ray, a child's best friend to learn about Pediatric Education

Rabbit Ray, a child's best friend to learn about Pediatric Education

Even for adults, a hospital is a scary place for many. The needles, procedures, uncertainty and the ever-present possibility of a painful event can be overwhelming. Not to mention for kids whose fear of the unknown is enhanced by a lack of knowledge on what goes on in a hospital.

It is to this end of illuminating this dark unknown that Eshter Wang, founder of Joytingle hopes to achieve with her product of compassion, Rabbit Ray, whose creation Esther recollected at TEDx Singapore Women in 2012 in the above video.

Her message and product resonate so well that even Johns Hopkins Children’s Centre (USA), Evelina London Children’s Hospital  (UK), National University Hospital (SG) and much more are now adopters of Rabbit Ray.

Simply put, Rabbit Ray is a toy that simulates medical procedures such as blood taking, chemotherapy, vaccination and more in a way that a child can understand and learn through play. This play allowing them to visualise what is going to happen and alleviate any extreme imagined thoughts of sharp needles left in their body for example.

Rabbit Ray is also not just for children undergoing current medical procedures but also for healthy children to learn and get use to things like blood donations in the future, which will save lives.

The use of a cute colourful smiling character like Rabbit Ray with his companion book and augmented reality app also removes the barrier of medical jargon and reinforces the learning process which also emphasises how these procedures can help the child recover better. In fact, as a testament to this point, even I learned quite a bit about these procedures from Rabbit Ray too.

One of the most excruciating periods of most medical procedures is when you are just waiting to go to surgery or for a consultation with the doctor. Rabbit Ray is a help then too, as like a favourite teddy bear, Rabbit Ray can be a companion toy to play with to help the child cope with a scary situation.

Last but not least, it is well known that focusing on physical recovery is not enough, helping the child post surgery or procedure mentally is important too.

Rabbit Ray can help there as the toy has been through the same blood takings, chemotherapy or any other procedures and thus feels like a comrade in arms. This friendship helping to boost the child's mental confidence during recovery. This, on top of the care of parents, will better ensure that the emotional side is handled as importantly as the physical, especially with procedures that require repeated treatments and are usually the most traumatic.

In conclusion, a Singapore-made product with purpose and a heart of compassion whose quality you can ensure by clicking here, where Esther herself shows and details the making of each Rabbit Ray.
