Can a primary-school child wear a watch phone to school in Singapore? It depends on the school. MOE’s guidelines on smartphones and smartwatches cover primary schools, but each school sets its own rules, so we advise parents to check with their child’s school first. In secondary school, from January 2026, students cannot use smartphones or smartwatches at any point in the school day.
The model question comes second. For a first watch in Primary 1, we start with the Z1 or the Z3. For a child who wants a flip camera and sports tracking, we suggest the Z7, and for upper primary, the X10.
That is how the conversation usually goes in October. Parents of children starting Primary 1 in January 2027 ask about the school first and the watch second, and we think that is the right way round.
Are watch phones allowed in school?

In 2025, MOE set out guidelines on students’ use of smartphones and smartwatches in primary and secondary schools. Each school tailors its rules to its own profile, context and curriculum needs, so there is no single answer for primary schools. For the same reason, we do not describe any watch, imoo included, as school-approved.
Secondary school is stricter. From January 2026, smartphones and smartwatches cannot be used during school hours, including recess and CCAs, and devices stay in lockers or school bags. These measures were announced in MOE’s 30 November 2025 press release.
The same release explains why smartwatches are included: they can be used for messaging and apps. It also notes that students may wear POSB Smart Buddy watches for e-payment. An imoo makes calls and sends messages, so we treat every imoo as a smartwatch under these rules.
MOE has also told Parliament that schools have their own protocols for emergencies. A parent with an urgent message can call the school’s General Office, and students can use the phones there.
So the watch is really for the journey to and from school, the playground, tuition and weekends. During school hours, the school’s rules apply, whatever they are. Every imoo in this guide has Class Mode (called School Mode on the Z7), which parents schedule in the imoo App. On the Z7, the screen shows only the time during those hours. Class Mode is a parental setting, not a school permission.
Which imoo watch phone suits which age?
All four are 4G watch phones with voice and video calls, location tracking, a chat for family and approved friends, and the imoo App for the parent’s phone, with no subscription fee. Each one can block calls from numbers that are not saved in its contacts.
imoo Watch Phone Z1
The Z1 suits a six- or seven-year-old whose first watch only needs to do the basics well. The imoo Watch Phone Z1 is SGD 179, in blue or pink, and it handles calls home, HD video calls through a 2MP wide-angle camera, GPS location, a step counter and Class Mode.
It is rated IPX8, which is fine for hand-washing and rain, but it is not a swimming watch. imoo puts typical battery life at about one to two days and recommends charging it every day.
imoo Watch Phone Z3
The Z3 is the first watch we suggest for a child who swims. The imoo Watch Phone Z3 is SGD 229, in blue or pink, and it is water-resistant to 20 metres, so pool and beach swimming are fine.
It also has a larger 1.5-inch screen, 8GB of storage and more mobile bands than the Z1, and its supported carriers include Singtel, StarHub and M1. Location tracking uses GPS, GLONASS, QZSS and Wi-Fi. A child can draw a “C” on the screen to call the watch’s admin parent in an emergency.
imoo Watch Phone Z7, plus Spider-Man and My Little Pony editions
The Z7 is for the child who will actually use the flip camera, usually somewhere between Primary 2 and Primary 4. The imoo Watch Phone Z7 is SGD 289, in blue or pink. Its face flips up, with a 5MP camera on the back and a 2MP camera on the front, so during a video call a parent can see both the child and their surroundings.
Location tracking uses five satellite systems, and the app keeps 14 days of location history. The Z7 also tracks heart rate, body temperature and mood through the day, has sports modes such as running and skipping, and is water-resistant to 20 metres. The health readings are for reference only, not for medical use.
The Z7 Spider-Man Limited Edition and the Z7 My Little Pony Limited Edition are the same flip-camera watch in a character design, at SGD 359 each. For a Christmas gift for a fan, the character design is the reason to choose one.
imoo Watch Phone X10
The X10 is the one we suggest for upper primary, and imoo positions it for ages 7 to 15. The imoo Watch Phone X10 is SGD 479 in pink or grey and SGD 499 in white. It is imoo’s first watch with a face that both flips up and detaches from the strap, so a child can hold it to their ear in a noisy place.
The cameras step up to 5MP front and 8MP rear. Location tracking uses five satellite systems with 14 days of history, and in supported places such as shopping centres, it can show which floor a child is on. It runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100 with 1GB of memory and 32GB of storage, tracks heart rate and has 10 sports modes. It does not measure body temperature or mood. There is no app store, so games cannot be installed. It is water-resistant to 20 metres.

How we choose, by stage

Primary 1 and Primary 2. A first watch has a simple job: calling home, sharing a location on the way back from school, and staying quiet during class. The Z1 does all of that. If the child has swimming lessons or spends weekends in the pool, we suggest the Z3 instead, because the Z1 is not made for swimming.
Primary 3 and Primary 4. This is where the Z7 makes sense. The flip camera gets real use, the sports modes encourage children to stay active, and the 14-day location history helps when a child starts travelling to tuition or CCAs with friends. A character edition turns it into a gift.
Primary 5 and Primary 6. The X10 fits a child who has outgrown a simple watch. If the plan is to keep using it in secondary school, the January 2026 rule applies: it stays in a bag or locker for the whole school day.
At every stage, the school’s rules come before the choice of model.
Before setting up the watch

Each imoo uses its own SIM card rather than the parent’s phone line, so it needs its own mobile plan. Calls require VoLTE on that line, and blocking unknown numbers requires caller ID to be turned on. For the Z1, imoo suggests about 1GB of data a month. We recommend confirming VoLTE and caller ID with the telco before the first day of school.
Then set up three things in the imoo App: the contacts the child can call, Class Mode for the school day, and who else in the family gets access.

All the watches are available on toytag.com, along with the rest of our imoo range, including replacement straps for the Z1 and Z7 and a spare Z7 charging cable.

FAQ: imoo watch phones in Singapore
Can my Primary 1 child wear an imoo watch phone to school?
It depends on the school. MOE’s guidelines cover smartwatches in primary schools, and each school sets its own rules. We suggest checking with the school first, then setting Class Mode for school hours.
Is imoo approved by MOE or by schools?
We do not describe any watch as school-approved or MOE-endorsed. Each school sets its own rules, so the school is the one to ask.
Can my child wear it in secondary school?
Not during school hours. From January 2026, secondary students cannot use smartphones or smartwatches at any point in the school day, including recess and CCAs. The device stays in a locker or school bag.
Does an imoo watch need its own SIM card?
Yes. Each watch uses its own SIM card, and calls require VoLTE on that line. The imoo App itself has no subscription fee, but the mobile plan is a separate cost.
Can my child swim with it?
The Z3, Z7 and X10 are water-resistant to 20 metres and suit pool and beach swimming. The Z1 handles hand-washing and rain, not swimming. None of them is suitable for showers, saunas or diving.
Z7 or X10: which one should I choose?
We suggest the Z7 for a child around Primary 2 to Primary 4 who wants the flip camera, sports modes and health tracking at SGD 289. We suggest the X10 for upper primary, when the stronger cameras, the detachable face and floor-level location are worth the step up to SGD 479 or SGD 499. The Z7 tracks body temperature and mood. The X10 does not.
